IPTV is an abbreviation you see more and more, but what exactly is IPTV? In one sentence: IPTV is television that reaches you over the internet, instead of through cable, a satellite dish or an aerial. Below we explain what that means, how it differs from what you already know and what you need to get started.

What does IPTV mean?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. The “internet protocol” is the language devices use to talk to each other online. With IPTV, TV channels are sent as small packets of data, just like a website or a video call. Your TV, phone or laptop turns those packets back into picture and sound.

That sounds new, but it hasn’t been for a long time. The TV services of many Dutch internet providers also work through IPTV. The difference is that they usually give you their own decoder, while with a separate IPTV subscription you watch with an app.

IPTV, cable and streaming: what’s the difference?

Feature Cable TV Streaming service IPTV subscription
How it arrives Through the cable Over the internet Over the internet
Live channels Yes Usually not Yes
Films and series on demand Sometimes, often extra Yes Yes
Extra box needed Often a decoder No No, an app is enough

In short, IPTV combines the best of both worlds: live channels like cable TV, and the convenience of an app like streaming.

What do you need?

  1. An internet connection. Stability matters more than top speed. Read how much internet speed you need.
  2. A device with an IPTV app. For example a Smart TV, a Fire TV Stick or your phone. See all devices.
  3. An IPTV subscription. It gives you the login details for the app. You can try it free for 24 hours first.

Why do people choose IPTV?

  • No extra equipment. You watch on what you already have.
  • On every screen. The same channels on the TV, your phone or your laptop.
  • Flexible. With us you pay once for 3, 6 or 12 months, without a contract or automatic renewal.
  • Everything in one app. Live TV, sport, films and series together.

What should you look out for?

Not every IPTV service is the same. Look at the picture quality on your own connection, the terms (money back, renewal) and whether the provider can be reached when something goes wrong. Also read our honest explanation of whether IPTV is legal in the Netherlands: the technology is legal, but it depends on the provider’s licences.
