The question we get most: is my internet fast enough for IPTV? The good news is that most Dutch households have more than enough speed. The less good news: the speed your provider promises isn’t always what reaches your TV.

How much speed do you need?

As a reference point we use the recommendations of big streaming services. Netflix, for example, recommends:

Quality Recommended speed (per screen)
HD (720p) 3 Mbps or more
Full HD (1080p) 5 Mbps or more
4K / Ultra HD 15 Mbps or more

If you watch on several screens at once, add it up. And leave room for others at home who stream, game or video call at the same time.

Stability matters more than speed

A 50 Mbps connection that stays stable is better for IPTV than 500 Mbps that keeps dropping for a moment. Live TV needs a constant stream of data. If it drops, the buffer runs empty and the picture freezes.

How to test your speed properly

  1. Run the test on the device you watch on, or as close to the TV as possible.
  2. Test at different times, including in the evening between 8 and 11 pm.
  3. Don’t only look at download speed, but also at ping and fluctuations.

Is there a big difference between a test next to the router and one at the TV? Then it’s your Wi-Fi.

Improving your connection

  • Use a network cable to the TV or TV box. That’s the best solution.
  • Move the router to an open, high spot, not in a cupboard or behind the TV.
  • Choose 5 GHz Wi-Fi if you’re close to the router.
  • Consider a mesh system or powerline adapters if the TV is far from the router.
  • Restart your router now and then.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50 Mbps enough for IPTV?

For one screen in Full HD, easily. Even with a few screens at once it's usually enough, as long as the connection is stable and the Wi-Fi signal at the TV is good.

Why does IPTV freeze when my internet is fast?

Often it's the Wi-Fi: the distance to the router, walls or a busy Wi-Fi channel. A speed test next to the TV shows what really arrives.

Is fibre better for IPTV?

Fibre is usually stable and fast, but cable and DSL work fine for IPTV too, as long as the connection is stable.
